TAKE A TRIP TO COLORADO AT ONE OF DALLAS’ NEW OFFICE TOWERS

When you walk through the lobby of Uptown Dallas’ new PwC Tower you are standing on the same stone that lines the Lincoln Memorial.

Developer Trammell Crow Co. got the beautiful white marble for the new office tower overlooking Klyde Warren Park from a historic Colorado quarry that supplied the stone for the Washington, D.C. monument to our 16th president and the Tomb of the Unknowns war memorial.

The same marble was used in the Colorado State Capitol and Manhattan’s landmark Equitable Building and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Yule Quarry near Crested Butte has been supplying marble since the late 1800s.
While back in the 1980s, architects and developers were in love with dark granite interiors, these days’s white marble is the favored lobby feature.

Trammell Crow wound up with the storied Colorado stone after looking at multiple sources for marble for the lobby of its 20-story tower, said Crow senior managing director Scott Krikorian.

“We went to Colorado and toured the quarry,” Krikorian said. “The drive up there was cold and dangerous.

“The Lincoln Gallery in the quarry is incredible.”

The trip to the quarry is 9,000 feet up a mountain overlooking an isolated valley and the tiny town of Marble, Col.

Back in the 1980s I used to hike up to the then abandoned marble quarry — which was all but forgotten — to see the huge excavations in that mountainside.
A series of avalanches and financial collapses had closed the stone workings in the 1940s. It wasn’t until 1990 that the first block of fine white marble came out of the mine again.

The quarry is now operated by Colorado Stone Quarries.

“It’s really beautiful and we are of course pleased with how it looks in the building,” Krikorian said.
